Juan Florentino is named Juan Delgado through an intervention of the schoolteacher.

José de León Torral is called José Diego. The schoolteacher changed his name to that of the assassin of Obregón. José loves his name, repeating it every chance he gets.

All children are named according to the Catholic calendar. They baptize children one week after birth. If the priest cannot come, it is [done] later. The day before the baptism the father asks a friend to be the godfather. Later he gives him a third of [a load of] firewood, 100 ears of corn, a cock or a hen, and tortillas. It is the duty of the godfather to buy a little suit of clothes.

The naming is done in town hall in front of the President. Only the child’s father attends.
